Double Listing - Journey's Greatest Hits
#1 & #6 still need to be combined. Per Wikipedia they are the same. I am having a hard time understanding the logic of your algorithm for ranking the overall Songs and Albums as well as the rankings for the yearly Top 100 Songs and Albums. For example even though this Album only has (3) fairly mediocre 'Peak Position' listings it is ranked as the #84 Album overall! There are hundreds of albums that seem to have much stronger listings. Also for some reason this Album is in the Top 100 Albums in (5) different years: 2011 - #100, 2012 - #87, 2014 - #72, 2015 - #74 & 2016 - #84. Why? I wish you would consider treating this site like your 'Tsort' site and just list these Songs & Albums in the (1) year where they have the strongest listings. Any chance of that? This system seems to distort the results. Would appreciate any info you can provide on this. Thanks. Chet
Data fixed, thanks
As the "Putting it all together" section in the "About" page explains we first calculate a score for every single day of the period then we add those up. So an album that has 10 weeks in the 20-30 positions will score more than one that only has one week in the number 5 slot (say). The peak position does not take into account the longevity.
The Tsort site uses just the peak position, because for most historic charts that is the only information we have. For the period after 1 Jan 2000 we actually have almost complete weekly charts for all the major countries. The restriction on the Tsort site that confines each album to only being a candidate for one year's "annual" chart is actually wrong, just because an album is #5 of one year should not disallow it from being the #10 album of the following year. But, of course, the limitations of data we have from before about 1980 means that the Tsort site has no option, that is the only consistent way to analyse the data up to about 1980.
The issue is that the two sites have different levels of data available, the way this chart is calculated is "more accurate" but demands a far higher level of input. The Tsort calculation can exploit data which is less dense and is designed to provide a better long-term view. As each year here is completed we do add this chart to the Tsort one to improve the later years in that site.
We honestly still think this is the best we can do with the data we have.
Thanks for the questions
